    Last time I wrote an answer to this question, I was doing it from my cell phone. Due to repeated inquiries and questions from fellow members of Quora I have decided to edit my answer, provide a bit of background and sources.

    I will not be talking about Lead content/MSG controversy. That is all over the news/internet/social networks anyways. I will be talking only about what was known since the past 15 years or so.

    Partly because our uncle had a Farsaan factory (an Indian deep fried snack item) and was once upon a time interested in setting up a “Maggi” (instant noodles) plant.

    And when I say Maggi here, It applies to almost all Instant noodles in the market. That includes Ramen (Nissin), Yippie (ITC), Knorr, etc.

    That also includes Atta noodles, oat noodles, curry etc.

    It does not, I repeat , does not include conventional pasta, conventional noodles, sewaiyan, or anything that is not labelled “Instant” or “2 minutes”

    Now I will try to make it simple and break it down so that everyone can understand.

    1. Ever wonder why Maggi gets cooked in just 2 minutes ?

    2. Have you noticed why the packaging of Maggi is so thin ?

    3. Wonder why it has a longer shelf life then most other products ?

    4. Why do people think that something like “bikaneri bhujia sev ” is un healthy while Maggi is supposedly healthy because it is “boiled” ?

    5. Ever wonder why Maggi (basically noodles in hot soup) which is tasty, filling, with a big marketing budget and sold by MNC’s like Nestle so cheap?

    I mean it is cheaper then a
    sada dosa at a darshini and yet so tasty and filling.

    Maggi is made of maida. Even your atta maggi is mainly made of maida. Then it is deep fried in Vanaspati (Dalda). Dalda is mainly Trans fat.

    Why Dalda? Because it has 3 times the longer shelf life compared to vegetable oil plus it’s tastier.

    Why is it deep fried. ? So that it’s easier to cook, faster to cook,

    remember, 2
    minute ruk sakte hain. More of a death tune.

    Dalda or Trans fat is perhaps the worst thing in the world we are still stuffing ourselves with.

    Always remember vegetable oil > saturated fats > Trans fat.

    Even ghee or butter are better alternatives then Trans fat.

    And I have not even mentioned the Sodium (Salt) part till now.

    It is poison, my dear fellow members. Even if it is lead free. Especially for the young ones.

    Are you so busy that you cannot spare extra ten minutes to make noodles properly? Or cook yourself some pasta?

    Is it so addictive, the savory taste of MSG?

    Most importantly I want this to be a message to all the young parents, who think Maggi is healthy because it is boiled while samosa/kachori/pakora/dosa are unhealthy.

    MY ANSWER IS MAINLY FOCUSED ON MSG – Since Maggi isn’t the only food item that contains it.

    Monosodium Glutamate – MSG (commonly known as Ajinomoto) enhances the taste of the food.

    It is not only present in Maggi but in mostly all packaged food items.

    It’s just that presently Maggi is in the limelight.

    There is always a permitted quantity which is not allowed to be exceeded by the did companies (but they are always.. Maggi contains 6 times the lead it’s permitted to )

    It’s present everywhere around.. Now it depends whether this topic will stretch or will Nestle be able to suppress this issue like Coca Cola did when tests prove it harmful.

    If it stretches further.. Through media and public.. Fingers will be pointed at other food items too and a mass check might be done.

    But you can’t completely eliminate MSG from the market.. As, if not in packaged foods it is used in high quantity in Chinese food and other street food items too.

    One should themselves keep a check and reduce the packaged food items consumption.

    If it’s so harmful, why is it put ?

    It is increasingly found in many packaged food items as it is a
    taste enhancer.

    Ajinomoto is nothing but a Japanese firm named Ajinomoto Corp.

    It produces this Ajinomoto food enhancer, in which the main ingredient is this monosodium glutamate commonly known as MSG.

    You won’t find or notice any side effects of MSG..But believe me EVERYTHING IN ACCESS IS BAD! And since it is used in so many packaged things and Street/Food at restaurants..MSG can be a slow killer.

    The health effect that it has at first are quite mild. But with expense of time they become severe.

    Here below is the list of some Side effects caused by this dangerous ingredient.

    1. Headache: This is a very common side effect of MSG. You normally get it. But due to continue intake of MSG this mild headache can take form of migraine. This migraine can be very severe.
    2. Overstimulates the nerves: As already discussed MSG is a neurotransmitter. It stimulates the nerves and misbalances the neurotransmitters. This leads to an unhealthy body.
    3. Heart effects: Excess intake doesn’t even leave heart unaffected. It leads to irregular heartbeats, cardiac muscles arrest and Chest pains.
    4. Burning sensation in the facial region is quite common due to regular intake of MSG.
    5. Pregnant women have to be very cautious regarding this ingredient as the breakdown of the barrier which would mean your baby is exposed to every substance in your blood, good or bad, in equal proportion as you.
    6. Even small kids should completely avoid consumption of MSG.
    7. MSG can be a reason for problems like blood pressure, thyroid issues, diabetes, asthma, food allergies and also obesity.
    8. Excess sweating is also a very common side effects of MSG.
    9. Nausea and weakness can also be felt after consumption of MSG
    10. It can also damage the retina of the eyes
    11. This ingredient can also be a reason forcausing cancer.

    Items That Contain MSG

    • Ready to eat food packets
    • Dehydrated soup packets
    • Dehydrated gravy packets
    • Instant noodles and cup noodles.
    • Preserved fish
    • All kinds of sausages
    • Tomato ketchup
    • Mayonnaise
    • Potato wafers
    • Soya sauce
    • All canned and preserved foods
    • All fast food items, especially Chinese

    These food items should be completely avoided. If you don’t, you are risking your life to an ingredient that will kill you slowly.

    Prefer food items made at home, basically organic and unprocessed food. I’m not saying that you should never eat these items.You can make all these items at home without the use of this dangerous MSG.

    After knowing all this, I’m pretty sure that you will avoid all kinds of ready-made food items. Not completely, but still you will try.

    See, life is very precious. Don’t pay high prices just for satisfying your taste buds. I will just say maintain one thing ‘say no to
    Ajinomoto or this ingredient MSG’

    1. Ensure that when you eat out there is no MSG added in the food item. When you buy products make sure that they are free of MSG.

    Of course it’s bad for health. Even keeping aside the current controversy about MSG or lead or whatever being over permissible limits, I’m surprised anyone thought Maggi was even remotely healthy. Not just Maggi, but also Top Ramen, Sunfeast Pasta, Knorr soups, and any instant foods.

    It is processed food. It’s packaged, which means it has preservatives. It’s made of maida and has high amounts of refined carbs. It has high fructose corn syrup (which is staple of most processed foods). It has high amounts of sugar, salt, and fat — the three addictive ingredients foods that keep us wanting to eat more of it even if not hungry. The noodles especially contain trans fats. It contains a gazillion artificial chemicals like colorants and flavoring chemicals (in the masala) and texturants (in the noodles) because processed foods do not really retain their natural flavors. The foods have to be recreated to resemble natural food, and that’s done all artificially. To extend its shelf life, the components of Maggi are refined and isolated, and are stripped of essential nutrients and fibers. This not only extends the amount of time you can keep sealed Maggi at home, it also makes you less full after consumption and you end up eating more and more. Removing essential nutrients fills you with empty calories: you need less energy to chew and swallow it, and you burn less afterward during digestion because the foods are almost already broken down when they enter your system. If left aside after cooking, it coagulates into a lump. Maggi could actually be a leading factor in causing obesity.

    Plus, like someone tweeted, it’s ridiculously inexpensive and can be made in four minutes. How could this possibly be healthy?

    Apart from the facts that some other people have mentioned, it was just recently found that it contains MSG (no, not the Messenger of God, but Monosodium Glutamate) and Lead more than permissible limits.

    Actually, Lead was 1700 frickin times more than the permissible limit!

    On a separate note, as a matter of fact, I just only a few days back discovered that Nestle, as a company doesn’t give two shits about its consumers at an extreme level. No ethics. No moral values. Just profit.

    I shit you not, I just found out that there’s been a call for a Nestle boycott since 1977.

    So, I’m almost done with anything nestle.

    Maggi is SAFE! At least safer than the vegetables we buy at the market-place.

    Do you have any idea what you eat??? Lead within ‘permissible limits’ is a JOKE if you consider the items we buy at the market every week. Just recently a batch of Alphonso mangoes were sent back from a country for high pesticide content. A crop consignment in UP was done away with because the irrigation waters were derived from a nearby waste-canal. These are cases that luckily saw the light of exposure. The tomatoes that you eat, the green veggies that you think are healthy, pomegranate, watermelon, even the fish that you buy are full of dangerous colours and here we are, acting all ‘holier than thou’, taking pride in bashing up an MNC that maintains international food standards across the globe.

    I have never seen such a singular example of a rampaging media destroying a brand that is responsible for having created a veritable food culture in the country. Who in all honesty can say that s/he doesn’t owe moments of pure pleasure to a hot bowl of maggi noodles? Can you imagine your childhood without Maggi? What do you do when you haven’t had time to cook all day and need to eat. You EAT MAGGI! That product has sustained generations after generations. Nestle made a conscious decision to exclude external addition of MSG -which is nothing but ‘ajinomoto’- years back. You have tonnes and tonnes of ajinomoto when you savour eating Chinese food in restaurants. ‘Thin packet’, ‘fried’……..oooooooooooo, that is so bad!!! ‘OMG, you meanie, you are feeding me poison!!!!’ Oh please! Maggi is what you call yourself an amateur cook for!!

    Maggi samples were sent for tests to labs abroad by Nestle itself. It was clearly proved to be safe. Yes, the taste-maker turned out to have extra lead levels in Delhi but the company clearly said that when you mix it with the cake and cook it, lead levels are perfectly within limits. There is more lead in the air you breathe than in a packet of Maggi . So many states banned it even without testing it. Maharashtra and Goa gave it a clean chit but clearly recanted under media pressure. The media created such a hullabaloo about Kerela’s ban. It was A LIE! A certain co-operative society decided not to sell it. This was publicized as a state ban by journalists hungry to bash whoever they can get their hands on. Kerela had given Maggi a clean chit too. This, I read in a tiny headline at the corner of the ET website. WOW!

    It all started in UP right. That guy, The ‘so-called’ hero…..O, there’s a dispute about that. They are having a fight over who gets to be called the hero. Did you know that? The samples tested were EXPIRED for God’s sake!!!!! Even Nestle does not advocate consumption of its expired items. The very same UP is reluctant to ban Maggi even today!!! Karnataka hasn’t banned it and West Bengal has been facing real problems for refusing to ban it. The mayor was harangued until the CM had to step in and say that the samples were tested safe, what to do??!!!!! Now, isn’t it sad that it turned out to be safe!!! Lead content lead content……please!!!! FSSAI…PEOPLE IN GLASS HOUSES SHOULDN’T THROW STONES AT OTHERS!!!!!

    I am desperately trying to stock up on Maggi. Do it friends while you still can….or don’t….if you think it is poison……I pity you all for living in such a fools’s paradise. Maggi is probably safer than whatever you plan to substitute it with. It pains me to see such a popular and dear brand being fed to the dogs because the food authority sees an opportunity to earn ‘compensation’ (check today’s papers), an attention seeking lawyer gets a bit of cheap publicity for suing filmstars, newspapers get to bash somebody just like Arnab Goswami gets to scream his lungs out at someone and he loves it.

    I pray that the brand is back as soon as possible and Nestle India, please get your stuff tested at least to stop the screaming media if for nothing else. Hostels boys in Bihar and Jharkhand are already stocking up and so are others. Please return because our stocks aren’t gong to last forever!!!!!!!!!

    As a rule of thumb, anything that’s packaged and can be preserved for long is unhealthy. There are very rare food items on this earth that remain healthy after they are preserved.

    A few ѕаmрlеѕ оf Maggi were соllесtеd іn Uttаr Prаdеѕh аnd tested for реrmіѕѕіblе ingredients at Kolkata’s referral lаbоrаtоrу. Maggi was fоund to соntаіn 17 parts реr mіllіоn оf lead, еnоrmоuѕlу сrоѕѕіng thе permissible limit of mеrе 0.01 раrtѕ per million оf lead.
