    Contrary to popular belief, higher brightness as long as it’s not uncomfortable is better. Why? Because brighter light means your pupils are smaller, which increases the depth of field and sharpness of your vision, making it easier for your eyes to focus. A dim screen forces your pupils to dilate, which means shallower depth of field. Shallower depth of field means your cornea (the lens of your eye) needs to adjust more for close focusing. Over time that adjustment increases your risk of nearsightedness, which is why myopia is increasing dramatically especially in Asian countries where children are expected to spend a lot of time studying rather than playing outdoors.

    Your pupils dilate or constrict depending on ambient light conditions, so the answer depends on your environment. There is a simple way to determine the optimal brightness for your environment. Display a white page (e.g. in MS Word or Acrobat Reader). Put a white piece of paper on your desk. Then adjust your monitor brightness so that the white page on your screen is no brighter than the paper on your desk. This simple adjustment will make reading more comfortable.

    If lighting changes (e.g. sun starts to set), your pupils will dilate, letting more light in, and will become more sensitive. So obviously you need to change brightness again when it gets darker, by matching a white page to a white paper.

    You can also get a display calibrator, and calibrate your monitor profile to be accurate at low brightness. I did that to all my monitors, and was able to operate them in much lower brightness, and they are much more comfortable to work with.

    Finally, look into e-paper monitors, such as Dasung paperlike or Clearink displays. They are much more comfortable to work with.

    But this has caused me problems I must admit. Watery eyes is the most common, so I always take a 10 minute break away from the screen every hour or so. My colleagues who set there brightness at a bare minimum to mediun don’t have this issue and strain on their eyes is much less as expressed by them. So definitely full brightness is not good.. But if you really want to set it at high, always remember to take breaks.

    When you use a computer/smartphone it is better to match the brightness with the ambient around you in such way that the image displayed looks “natural”. The best way is the way that makes your eyes comfortable and usually less brightness cause less damage.

    This is the mistake we do, we think watching the screens at low brightness will not cause eye issues, and watching the screens at high brightness will increase the eye issues.

    But the thing is using the screens with ZERO EYE STRAIN screens on them will not cause any affect on eyes even in high or low brightness.

    You aren’t asking quite the right question.

    You’ll see more detail on bright settings, until you can’t because the bright settings make your eyes hurt. Craft an opposite position for lower brightness.

    A better way to look at this is “what’s happening?”. I recommend a free utility called f.lux to manage the way light and color is presented on your screen. Kind of amazing to watch it go yellow if you’re looking at your screen at the moment the sun sets, and also kind of amazing to realize how much better off you are overall letting ambient conditions answer the question.

    Experiment, and choose whatever is most comfortable. You have started on the right track, already, by asking. Do not forget to include, in your adjustments, the chair height, position of the monitor, and the position of your legs and feet!

    If you are right handed, the window should be on your left, and vice versa. iIf the window is behind you, you are likely to get reflected glare onto your screen. If the window is in front of you, you are getting more light into your eyes than optimum, reducing your pupil size, and the amount of light coming from the screen.
