WARSAW, Poland (AP)– Researchers at Warsaw’s zoo have actually been taking blood, saliva and other samples from the zoo’s three elephants in current days to prepare to check whether providing hemp oil can reduce their stress.

Dr. Agnieszka Czujkowska, a zoo vet, said hemp oil, likewise referred to as CBD, or cannabidiol oil, has actually been shown to minimize anxiety and tension in other animals, consisting of horses and pets.

The zoo’s professionals thought it made good sense to see if could likewise help their animals, including giraffes, rhinos and polar bears. They decided, however, to begin their tests on their 3 African elephants, who have undergone a duration of stress following the death in March of a fellow older female, Erna.

” Basically tension is everywhere and we do not know what’s going to occur in the future,” she said. “Maybe among the elephants will be pregnant, maybe there will be some sort of injury often. They can break a tusk– it occurs. They can get ill for no reason,” she said.

” We wish to have something that will let them efficiently go through this period.”

While the research study has drawn sensationalist headlines, Czujkowska discussed that hemp oil is not a drug and is various from cannabis due to the fact that it does not contain THC, the main psychedelic substance in marijuana.

If the study works as hoped, the oil will simply “calm them down a little bit,” and have anti-inflammatory and other benefits, she told The Associated Press on Friday as the animals consumed large branches behind her.

” It will operate in various ways but it will not provide any high,” she stated. “Hemp oil is not a drug.”

” We would never use anything that threatens to animals,” she included.

She and zookeepers brought the sole male elephant, Leon, into a pen Friday and from outside a protective cage they reached in to draw blood and take saliva samples. He followed his keepers as they bought him to raise his trunk so they could take saliva swabs.

Some 300 samples– of blood, saliva, urine and feces– have been taken over the previous week in preparation.

To name a few things, the researchers are measuring the elephants’ levels of cortisol, the stress hormone. If all goes as prepared, they will be able to begin administering drops of hemp oil in a couple of weeks however it’s anticipated to take up to 2 years to get results from the study, Czujkowska said.

After Erna’s death, the staying two females have actually struggled to develop a hierarchy.

The 23- year-old Fryderyka, also referred to as Fredzia, has actually long tried to control the other female, Buba, also 23, but was kept in check to some degree by Erna, who helped to resolve disputes.

Since Erna’s death, Fredzia in specific has revealed higher levels of tension as she tries to manage Buba’s consuming and other behaviors.

Fredzia “is stressed because she is the boss of the herd. It resembles having a manager, 10 employees and suddenly 8 are laid off, and this manager has nothing to do,” stated Patryk Pyciński, a mammal professional at the zoo who is involved in the elephant study.

He said the zoo’s scientists hope that minimizing tension levels will also enable Fredzia to develop. He said if she has her own offspring to guide, it could reduce her impulse to dominate Buba and decrease tensions in the group.
