    UNDERSTANDING THE EARTH

Measuring small earthquakes allows geologists to study areas underground. Geologists can measure the way that the vibrations of earthquakes travel and make inferences about the type of material the vibrations pass through. Geologists can find water aquifers, oil and natural gas deposits and other important resources based on information they gain from earthquakes. Geologists can also measure the size and extent of these resources to better understand exactly how large the deposits are.

    PLATE TECTONICS

Earthquakes are the earth’s way of releasing energy stored in plate tectonics as they move. If plate tectonics could not move, the world would look dramatically different, with no mountains and distinctly smaller oceans. As plate tectonics move, it naturally cycles materials from the mantle of the earth. The seafloor that new material creates harbors thousands of species of plants and animals, which themselves play important roles in the human ecosystem by doing things like absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen through photosynthesis. Without the movement that allows earthquakes, none of this could occur on the earth.

    6 Benefits from Performance-Based Engineering

Earthquakes are destructive to living organisms and property, but are there any advantages?

Yes there are, let me list them out!

    1. The stresses which have been accumulated over long period of time gets released as earthquakes. This means after a big earthquake chances for another big one reduces considerably.
    2. When these stresses are released they create new fault planes or movement along old planes.
    3. This movement can help oil and gas reservoirs to get punctured and seep through this new structure. This may bring them to shallower depth where we can exploit them easily.
    4. This movement can create new islands as the block beneath the ocean can get lifted above mean sea level.
    5. They can bring mineral deposits to shallower depth as the block is up thrown.

This doesn’t mean we should hope for an earthquake now and then. Yesterday there was an earthquake in Mexico. It killed around 200 people. 🙁 My heart goes out for them!

    Abhi.

Ummmm… if you’ve survived one (or more in the same place), you’ve gained concrete knowledge that you’re living in an earthquake zone?

The planet benefits tremendously from earthquakes: evolving under the influence and guidance of its own energy-and-mass balance is how and why it exists.

Because it’s a planet, it has absolutely no understanding of (or regard for) a single living organism it happens to host at any moment: its absolute obedience to the fundamental laws of nature (we call that “Physics”) dictates that it can’t behave in any other way.

About a quarter of a billion years ago, Earth itself nearly wiped out every species it hosted. There’s no good/bad morality in the story. it’s simply how our home continued and continues to become what it will be.

Earthquake is a manifestation of the destructive forces of nature. Looking for advantages in destruction is a nice idea.

Perhaps the biggest advantage of earthquake to mankind is about revealing its inner structure more precisely and the geodynamics of the earth internal layers. If you are looking for other advantages, I will direct you to my earlier answer to similar question on Quora :

Nature is a dynamical system created by energy imbalances. In of this, earthquake is to restore small-scale energy imbalance and pushing the entire Earth to have a new phase. Earthquakes keep on changing the so called national boundaries (bogus divisions by hungry people) and churn large rocks into smaller ones and form new grounds. In the form of tsunami, it alters shore lines. As a child I always thought that once a map is created, role of map makers is over, now I realize final map making is the toughest job and it will become reality with the end of the universe.

Earthquakes relieve stress. If you get a lot of small ones, maybe you won’t get one really big one that flattens everything for miles around.

Otherwise, hmm, maybe a good earthquake will destroy the shandy town that your urban planners have been wanting to get rid of for years. Nothing like a good fire or earthquake or bombing campaign to get rid of the old squalid buildings in city centres so you can build modern stuff.

Yes, it relieves strain on faults. Smaller ones help prevent bigger ones and release the stored energy in smaller bursts. On the flip side, they can also increase strain in other areas. But in general, many smaller quakes can put off rare big ones for longer time periods.

And if you like beautiful landscapes, earthquakes are responsible for mountains. There is a saying in geology: The more beautiful a place is, the more dangerous it is.

The benefits of ewrthquakes are mainly pressure release on the tectonic plates and adjustment of the global geology to prevent cataclysmic and titanic forces that have the potential to open a rift to the mantle of the earth and cause massive climate shift, huge lava and magmatic explosions and floes, and other such disasters for which there is no remedy.

Occasional earthquakes of medium magnitude and minimal magnitude are necessary to relieve the pressure buildup along the contacting edges of subduction zones, which eventually form mountains and oceanic abyssals.

An Earthquake may cause people to be better prepared for another one in the future. This may reduce the chance of injury, loss of life, or property damage from a subsequent earthquake.

If the first quake is relatively weak, it may thus be able to have done more good than harm.

The big result of earthquakes on people is bad; destruction, harm, disruption, but there are also some good byproducts. The mountains, streams, and general natural beauty of tectonically active areas only arise from plate tectonics, which inevitably requires earthquakes. Rebuilding damaged areas often allows modernization and improvement. To the scientists, seeing moderate earthquakes and big earthquakes in sparsely (and densely) populated regions allows better ideas of effective preparation for when the next earthquakes hit vulnerable cities.
