CGPA is a grade pointing system used in the educational sector. Cumulative Grade Points is the average of grade points obtained in all the subjects (Note:- excluding the sixth additional subject).

How to Calculate CGPA

Consider that you have 5 main subjects.

Hindi, English, Malayalam, Science, and Math and your scores are as below

Hindi = 8.5

English= 8

Malayalam = 8.5

Science = 9

Math = 9

Then the total is 8.5+8+8.5+9+9 = 43

Then your CGPA score will be = 43/5 = 8.6

How to calculate CGPA in percentage

Calculating CGPA in percentage is even easier = 8.6 x 9.5 = 81.7%

Wondering why to multiply with 9.5?

The 9.5 is a score obtained when the board calculated the average mark scored by candidates/ students in between 91 to 100 (The average score was 95). As you all are familiar with the strand A1 is associated for scores that fall in between 91 and 100. If you calculate the difference then its 10.

95/10 = 9.5

CGPA is abbreviated for Cumulative Grade Point Average.

So, what it means is that suppose a school or a college has certain rules and regulations while calculating the CGPA.

So you have four subjects of 100 marks each. So what will happen is out of the total marks some marks will be the bench marks of grade points. Such as above 91 A1, then 81-90 A2 and so on. You will be given grades according to your marks.

Then each grade will have a certain value. A1 means grade point 10, A2 means grade point is 9 and so on. Next there are four subjects and lets assume one has grades A1, A2, B1, and C1. Alright so his grade points will be 10,9,8 and 6. And their average that would be (10+9+8+6)/4=8.25 on 10. Now in India, as far as I know the grade point system is on the maximum to be 10, in American Universities it is maximum CGPA of 4 and so is different in different systems.

• What exactly is CGPA?It is the average of Grade Points obtained in all the subjects excluding additional 6th subject as per Scheme of Studies.
• How to calculate percentage from CGPA?Multiply the CGPA with 9.5 or use the above calculator to get the overall indicative percentage.
• Why multiply with 9.5 only?The Board took the result of the last five years and calculated the average marks of all candidates who had scored between 91 and 100. That average turned out to be close to 95 marks. Since the equivalent Grade Point for the 91-100 band (A1 grade) of marks is 10, it then divided the average result of 95 by 10. The result is 9.5.

I think CGPA also known as cumulative grade point average is important. In any education system, it is a record of your academic work. If you wish to study further in a graduate program, the transcript shows evidence of your work. For example, a consistent record of B+ is different than a fluctuation between C and A. They say different things about your work. A CGPA qualifies you for certain jobs as well. Employers review your grades and coursework prior to hiring you.

This does not claim CGPA is the only measure of good work. Of course, it is multifaceted. Like how well do you write? How coherent is your purpose? Are you creative? Do you work well with others? How high are your SAT or GRE scores? These suggest some questions that pin down good work.

CGPA is nothing but an average of your score in every semester. Some good companies like SAP require a minimum CG of 7. So u had to maintain a good CG. When there are lot of students in a college and the company say they had to take less than 10 students then instead of making room for every student to sit in there test, colleges prefer to reduce the students and there is no other way possible to remove student until you set a CG criteria.

In IITs and few other colleges it is also called CPI, but it means the same. And after that comes SGPA, which is calculated in every semester based on your performance in that semester. So basically CGPA/CPI is the average of your SGPA!

CGPA – Cumulative Grade Point Average

SGPA – Semester Grade Point Average

CPI – Cumulative Performance Index

Well it’s the combined aggregate of your academic term performance for the semester year ranging from 0–10 with 0 being the least and 10 being the highest. Mostly used in engineering universities it’s a method of calculating percentage but instead of using regular out of 100 percent the marks are aggregated and brought down to 10.

Cumulative Grade Point Average(CGPA) is the average of Grade Points got in every one of the subjects barring sixth extra subject according to Scheme of Studies.

Cumulative Grade Point Average(CGPA) would likewise be reflected in the Grade card so there is no compelling reason to calculate it. Be that as it may, you can utilize the accompanying formula to figure general CGPA : CGPA = sum of Grade points (main 5 subjects) divided by 5
